In Lohardaga, the police have busted a gang whose vicious criminals used to copy thumb fingerprints to make rubber stamps and then stealing money from people’s bank accounts through biometrics. This gang has stolen lakhs of rupees from the bank accounts of people.
In Lohardaga, the police had two cases of stealing money from a bank account. One of these was an old case, which was being investigated. While one such new case came to light, the suspicion of the police went to Pragya Kendra operator and stamp vendor. The accused neither use the phone. Nor did the victims get any call. Nor did anyone ask for OTP or password. Moreover, the victims did not tell their mobile number, account number, Aadhaar number to anyone. Neither clicked on any link.
It was shocking even for the police that how this cyber crime happened. Investigation revealed that fingerprints and their Aadhaar were taken from the victims of fraud at Pragya Kendra. Pragya Kendra has been created to give benefits of government schemes and facilities to the people through digital medium. In fact, it became the den of vicious thugs and money started being spent here from the bank accounts of poor, less educated people.
SP Priyanka Meena told that after copying the fingerprints of the people, it was used in the biometric by making rubber stamps. In rural areas, people can withdraw up to 10 thousand rupees by putting thumb in biometrics from mobile banks and Pragya Kendras. The thugs took away one lakh 70 thousand rupees by copying the fingerprint.
Those who had more money in their account, these thugs used to make them their victims. Police has arrested 8 vicious people. 33 finger print rubber stamps, laptops, etc. have been recovered from them. After the disclosure of this modus operandi of cybercrime, the police has appealed to people to be careful in giving thumb impression and Aadhaar number. The police is engaged in further investigation in this matter.
